Bruce Cotter was born in Philadelphia, PA, the oldest of 3 children. He has a middle sister and a younger brother. He is a preacher’s kid which required moving. The family moved from Philadelphia to Collinsville, MA, when he was age 5 and then on to Babylon, NY at age 10. Babylon is located on Long Island. He graduated from Babylon High School which is also where his high school sweetheart came to him in the 9th grade. (That sounds like an interesting story.) He ran track while in High School and still holds the record for the 100 yard dash.
A 4-year tour in the Coast Guard didn’t take him too far from home as he was stationed at Fire Island/Long Island most of the time. He did spend a short stint (1 year of isolated duty) in Alaska. In the middle of the tour in 1961, he and his H.S. sweetheart, Flo, were married in Babylon NY. In 1986, the family moved to Virginia.
Bruce and Flo moved to San Antonio in 1989. They have 2 children, Rich and Amy. Rich has a son and their daughter Amy has 3 children.
The Cotters attend Community Bible Church where Bruce alternates Sundays operating the PowerPoint presentation for the choir. He is part of the communication team that assists at the services.
Although he attended the College of Insurance and concentrated on the insurance side for years he decided to concentrate his business in preparing retirement plans and investments for small businesses about 10 years ago. He started the business in 1969, so has been at it for over 40 years.
When not working, Bruce likes to build ponds and do wild/xeriscape landscaping. He also plays racquetball 3 times a week getting there at 5:30 – 6:00 am.
Although he rarely reads books, the last one was “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferris. The premise is to have other people do the work and connect through the internet. Bruce said it would take a highly organized person to accomplish this and someone who seeks to avoid personal relationships, which is certainly not his style.
Bruce has been with CBCC since its inception in 2003. He has served as President, V.P., and Secretary. He is currently having a blast doing the directory and website.
